Engineering Design Process FET - Mini Lesson 9-24-14

Over the next few weeks, we will be learning how new

technologies are developed and manufactured and how they affect

your way of life. You will complete a few introductory tasks about
developing new products, the engineering design process, and how
to make engineering drawings. You will also design your own new products, first as an individual, then as a member of a design team.

At this point, most of you have already gotten a chance to create a spaghetti tower in the Marshmallow Challenge, design a car with no wheels that could go up a wall, and build a tower with index cards.  Now, we need to go back and discuss the process that should have been taken to design the prototypes.  We will use the process below throughout the course.  You will also put this process in your Engineer's notebook.

Over the next few weeks your will do the following:

1.1 What Is Engineering? (notebook entry see workbook) 9-24-14

1.2 Design a Cell Phone Holder

1.3 Engineering Drawing

1.4 Define the Problem

1.5 Research the Problem

1.6 Develop Possible

Solutions

1.7 Choose the Best Solution

1.8 Create a Prototype

1.9 Test and Evaluate

1.10 Communicate the

Solution

1.11 Redesign

You will notice that the Engineering Design Process is very similar to the scientific method.  You will need to know both in order to be a successful student or Engineer.
